Yes. Pure henna (Lawsonia inermis) deposits a red-orange molecule (lawsone) that permanently bonds to hair keratin. It delivers real, lasting color that builds with repeated applications. The result on darker hair is a richly tinted reddish sheen; on lighter hair, more vivid orange or copper tones. It cannot lighten hair.

This is a significant concern. Metallic salts sometimes present in impure henna products can react unpredictably with peroxide-based conventional dyes, potentially causing severe damage or breakage. Always use pure henna (single-ingredient with no metallic additives) and disclose all previous henna treatments to your colorist.

Pure henna covers gray with a warm reddish tone. Henna combined with indigo and cassia creates brown to black results that cover gray more completely than henna alone. Some plant-based color products use other botanical pigments for additional tone variety. Coverage is often more sheer than conventional permanent dye.
